Moon Theory is an engaging synthesis of cyber rock grooves, trip-hop, and electronic music. Catchy songwriting and futuristic production are complemented by the hauntingly beautiful vocals of Kaeti O'Ghara, whose voice offers both allure and versatility. Producer TSO's alchemical electronics and guitars further support and accentuate her vocals. From down-tempo and intoxicating to aggressive, the music communicates with a distinctive personality. The stylish blend of digital wizardry, dark driving hip-hop elements, and psychedelic permutations make Moon Theory great fun to get lost in, while a clear undercurrent of Earthen magic and social relevance offer refrshing and compelling depth.
The song "Insomnia," as well as most of Moon Theory's music, was created on a Mac G4, and recorded on a Pro Tools TDM system. TSO has used Apple computers exclusively since childhood, beginning with an Apple II Plus, which had a whopping 64k of RAM. That was then; now, says TSO, "We have six Macs total in use at our facility."
Based in San Francisco, Moon Theory began as a study in trip-hop imbued with rock songwriting sensibilities, and evolved into an interplay of various polarities, such as the coming together of shamanic imagery with scientific influences. This unusual coalescence is most obvious in their lyrics—the song "Shapeshifter" is a prime example—yet it's also prevalent in the soundscape iteself, such as in "Mother," with its weaving of organic and electronic elements. Also striking is Moon Theory's poignant philosophical commentary as evidenced in the song, "Feed Your Master"—a powerful and intensely disturbing satire of corporate media manipulation and consumerism.
Like Garbage on ecstacy, the self-titled CD tantalizes with a guitar-oriented, organic beauty while injecting potent doses of futuristic chaos. Moon Theory is currently performing live in support of the album with a second release in the works.
